Gemma threw herself into
this well at the Giannini house to overcome a temptation. One day
when Gemma had finished eating dinner, the devil appeared to her
and snorting with rage threatened to overcome her at any cost with
a temptation against purity. Gemma turned pale, raised her hands
to Heaven, and without hesitation ran straight to a deep well in
the garden. It was winter and the water was freezing. She made the
Sign of the Cross, and threw herself in. She most certainly would
have drowned had not some invisible hand come to her assistance
and drawn her shivering from the water. |
